As the X Factor contestants dream of being the next Alexandra Burke, they'll have forgotten about those talent show hopefuls who went before them such Michelle McManus.
Her music career didn't take off quite as she might have expected.
Yet Michelle's win on Pop Idol in 2003 has led to a quietly successful media career.
'Michelle is on Scottish TV every day on the sofa, presenting a show called The Hour which is similar to The One Show,' says a pal.
'She still does public appearances and sings. Michelle was never as successful as Leona Lewis, but she has made a decent living out of it.'
Michelle, 29, famously battled with her weight but won over viewers.
She was accused of benefiting from the Scottish vote, along with Journey South, whose album sales plummeted in England, but achieved a No 1 position in South Africa.
