Director Sydney Pollack dies of cancer

Academy award winner passes away at family home

Sydney Pollack rose to fame in the 80s

Sydney Pollack has died of stomach cancer at the age 73.

The Academy Award-winning director passed away yesterday at his home in LA, surrounded by family and friends.

Sydney rose to fame in the 80s when he won 2 0scars for directing and producing 1985 Best Picture winner Out of Africa, which starred Robert Redford, now 71, and Meryl Streep, 58.

He recently worked with George Clooney, 47, on hit movie Michael Clayton, which brought him his 6th nomination.

‘Sydney made the world a little better, movies a little better and even dinner a little better,’ George said yesterday after hearing of is death.

‘A tip of the hat to a class act. He’ll be missed terribly.’

Sydney leaves behind his wife, Claire Griswold, daughters Rebecca and Rachel, and 6 grandchildren.

His son Steven died in a plane crash in 1993.
