Brian Hibbard played Doug Murray in Coronation Street

Former Coronation Street star Brian Hibbard has died at the age of 65 after a long battle with prostate cancer.

The actor - who played Deirdre Barlow's love interest Doug Murray in the soap for 10 months before leaving in 1993 - passed away in hospital with his wife Caroline by his side.

He'd been diagnosed with the disease in 2010 and became seriously ill 8 weeks ago.

Brian first came to fame as the lead singer and founding member of a cappella group The Flying Pickets, who scored a Christmas No 1 single in 1983 with a cover of Yazoo's Only You.

In 1997, he starred with Rhys Ifans and Dougray Scott in the film Twin Town.

More recently, the dad-of-3 had roles as Henry Mason in EastEnders and Bobby-John Downes in Emmerdale.

'His family were the most important thing in his life,' Brian's friend and Twin Town co-star Boyd Clack tells the Daily Mirror.

'He was an honest, decent and upright man. He was also a great singer, a great actor and a fine socialist.'
