Hero set to stay at the top of the charts for third week
Thursday, 13 November 2008
The X Factor single Hero has raised over £1 million for charity.
The track, a cover of Mariah Carey’s hit, has been at number 1 in the charts for 2 weeks – selling over 540,000 copies.
All profits from the song are being donated to the Help For Heroes charity – with the government even wiping off the VAT on the price – resulting in over £1 million being raised.
‘This sum is absolutely amazing,’ Help For Heroes founder Bryn Parry tells The Sun. ‘I had no idea people would buy the single and give so generously.
‘A massive thank you to everyone who has bought it – your money will go a very long way to help our wounded troops.’
Hero has been named the best-selling single of the year this week.
Will Young still holds the record for the biggest single of the decade – after selling 1.8 million copies of track Evergreen after winning Pop Idol in 2002.
