Style guru tells interviewees to tidy his home for him if they want a job
Sunday, 20 July 2008
Gok Wan says if fashion styist wannabes apply for a job with him, he gets them to tidy his apartment as part of his interview technique.
The way someone arranges his belongings tells him if they have a clever eye for design.
‘It’s a really good way of finding out about that person’s sense of style as well as picking up on other skills they might have,’ the 34-year-old explains.
‘You can teach people to sew, set up a fashion shoot, send emails, deal with the media, but what you can’t teach is a sense of style. You’ve either got it or you haven’t, it’s as simple as that.’
Gok's a natural on TV because he has a theatrical background - but it took him a while to find fame.
‘I dropped out of my drama course at university after a year and just floated from rubbish job to rubbish job, with no self-esteem and no idea what I wanted to do,’ he tells Take It Easy magazine.
‘I thought I wanted to get into hair and make-up, which I did for a short time, and then I fell in with a stylist by chance and very soon fell in love with everything about the fashion industry.’
God now presents Gok’s Fashion Fix on Channel 4 and is working on a new season of How to Look Good Naked.
