Topshop and Marks & Spencer have become the first stores in the UK to join the new Fur Free Retailers scheme.

The initiative, set up by Respect For Animals, allows consumers to shop 100% safe in the knowledge that every fur product that catches their eye is man-made.

'Topshop is delighted to sign up to the Fur Free Retailers initiative,' says Topshop buying director Karen Fenn.

'We have a long-standing anti-fur policy and we feel very strongly about the use of fur in fashion and believe that the breeding of animals for their skin cannot be justified. To create the look we use high-quality faux and artifical furs.'

And the sentiment's exactly the same over at M&S. 'Animal welfare is an issue which both Marks & Spencer and our customers are passionate about,' says Katie Stafford, the store's sustainable development manager.

'This is why we have maintained high animal welfare standards for many years and remain committed to our strict no-fur policy.'
