Must-see: David Hockney – master of style

For a taste of seminal 1970s style, look no further than David Hockney Portraits, the sensational new exhibition of the work of one of Britain’s best-loved artists at London’s National Portrait Gallery.

The centrepiece of the show is without doubt the stunning Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy, voted one of the nation’s all-time favourite paintings in a recent BBC poll.

Painted between 1970 and 1971, this engaging wall-sized canvas depicts Hockney’s close friends, fabric designer Celia Birtwell and her fashion designer husband Ossie Clark, at home, with one of their cats (who was actually called Blanche).

The show features several other beautiful portraits of Celia, among 150 wonderful paintings and drawings of the artist’s friends, family and associates, spanning 1954 to the present day.

A trip to the National Portrait Gallery has never been more worthwhile!
