Doctors said to be concerned about her weight loss

Nicole Richie has been ordered to switch her daughter to bottle feeding – because the The Simple Life star is losing too much weight.

Doctors are said to be concerned that she’s become too skinny since giving birth to Harlow Winter, 6 months, reports the Daily Star.

Breastfeeding burns vast amounts of calories and it seems it's been taking its toll on tiny Nicole.

Nicole, 26, gave birth in January with fiancé Joel Madden, 29, by her side.

While some women naturally move to a weight lower than their pre-pregnancy weight, women whose weight drops significantly low should consider adding calories to their diets so that they may continue breastfeeding. Breastfeeding not only enhances our children's immune systems but may increase their intelligence not to mention the trusting relationship they will have with their mother. I sincerely hope that Nicole continues to breastfeed, and that she cares for herself so that she may be an excellent mother.

How well researched is this story ?. Breastfeeding does not use up vast amounts of calories - Approx 500 extra , which is around 2 chocolate bars ! Besides the body is clever at making milk , and will use up energy efficiently when lactating (Remember Nicole was not big before pregnancy either). Rather than saying switch to formula - which will certainly have a negative effect on the baby's health -feeding artifical milk could cause constipation,colic allergies etc. She could work on improving the maternal diet . What a really bad piece of info to even suggest that she stop breastfeeding. A lot of the world's population have a poor diet and manage to breastfeed sucessfully - . This article will do nothing to help this country's already poor breastfeeding rates.

Make her eat better, there could also be other reasons she is loosing the weight. I really hope she gets a second opinion, i hope she finds another way to stop this weight loss as she really doesnt need to stop feeding!!!

As a former children's nurse, I'm acutely aware of how breast milk protects babies and young children against many diseases that can cause much suffering to them. The vital immunities in breast milk can help protect against gastro-enteritis, ear infections, etc., and even certain childhood cancers and juvenile diabetese (a devastating diseases that can BLIND a child) are less common in breast fed infants. Therefore, Nicole should be advised to carry on breast feeding, but eat more healthy food, NOT stop breast feeding.
