If you’re looking to escape abroad for the weekend, jump on a flight to Athens.

The bustling capital of Greece received a much-needed makeover in 2004 when it played host to the Olympic Games. Its unique charm, ancient monuments and warm weather make it the perfect summer getaway.

Temperatures soar from May-August and it's only 3 and a half hours from the UK.

What is there to do?

With the opening of the new Acropolis Museum, Athens has become a hotspot for historians and tourists alike. Situated in area of Makriyianni, it is just 300 metres below the Acropolis, and offers breathtaking views of the city.

The museum (€1 until 2010) offers visitors a three-dimensional experience, allowing you to study the archeological excavations of the Archaic Gallery right through to the Classical period in the Parnethon Gallery.

Other must-see tourist attractions include the Temple Of Zeus, a monument dedicated to the father of the Gods and Mars Hill, the court of ancient Athens.

If the bustling traffic and relentless crowds of tourists get too much, head to the beach. Only 20 minutes away by car, it is a welcome break from the humidity of the city.

Where can I shop?

Athens boasts a number of shopping malls and boutiques. On Sundays, market stalls spring up in Monastiraki Square, antique dealers lay their goods out on carpets and visitors barter their way through the narrow streets.

If you’ve got money to spend, head to the department stores at the Hondos Centre where you’ll be surrounded by designer clothes, brand names and eager shop assistants.

What about nightlife?

Athens comes to life at night, egged on by the warm breeze and an afternoon siesta. Locals don’t eat out until 10pm, taking their time to browse the menus, sip coffee and catch up with friends.

For traditional Greek food, head to the old quarter of Plaka. Its cobbled lanes are awash with tavernas and bars, with tables spilling out onto the street. Enjoy the fresh salads, tatziki dips and warm bread. Lamb Souvlaki is particularly good, and dishes start from around €14 (£12).

If you’re feeling brave, opt for the local drink ouso – but beware, the bar tenders are heavy handed!

For a change of scenery, try Mythos restaurant at the Divanis Apollon Palace & Spa. Situated directly on the beach, this luxurious establishment prides itself on local produce and fresh fish.

Where’s the best place to stay?

The Divani Palace Acropolis is just a stone’s throw from the ancient ruins of the Acropolis. Just a short walk from the museum, it’s the perfect location for those wanting to explore the capital on foot. This 5-star hotel alludes charm and peace and quiet. The Aspasia restaurant caters for those with big appetites – providing everything from a full fry up to roast potatoes and chocolate croissants. Prices start at €110 (£94) per night for a deluxe room and €750 (£644) for an executive suite.

If you’re after a more affordable option, there are many hostels and hotels located throughout the city. The cheapest time to visit is May, September and October.
