David Tennant is reported to be close to signing a £1.5m deal to remain as Doctor Who until the end of 2010.

It was feared the actor would quit after filming a final 4 specials as the Timelord for BBC1.

But now David, 37 – who is preparing for the role of Hamlet in a production for the Royal Shakespeare Company – is being lured back with an irresistible contract.

‘We’re gearing up to offer him a massive deal,’ a source tells The Sun. ‘He’s interested. Everyone thought he was going, but it’s not as open and shut as that.’

Currently dating onscreen daughter Georgia Moffett, 23, David will start filming the fifth series in autumn 2009 if he signs up.

Writer Russell T Davies has quit but Steven Moffett has joined the production.

'It will be a new team and David has to meet everyone to make a final decision,' says the insider.
