This Morning presenter reveals the secret behind her dramatic weight loss
Sunday, 1 June 2008
Fern Britton has revealed that she’s had weight-loss surgery.
In 2006 the This Morning presenter had a gastric band fitted to reduce the size of her stomach and has now lost 5st.
Fern’s new figure was reported to be down to her new hobby of cycling and careful dieting but now the 50-year-old has revealed her secret.
‘As interest is so high, I am making public, as a personal choice, that I had a gastric band operation two years ago,’ Fern said in a statement yesterday.
‘I did this purely for myself and I would not wish to influence others to do the same. But for me it has worked and I am very pleased with the results.’
The mum-of-four is now in training for a charity bike ride in Cuba later this year.

I think the decision to have a gastric band fitted is a personal one and she shouldn't have to tell people if she doesn't want to. It was wrong, however, of her (and Phil Vickery!) to put her weight loss down to simply moving more and eating less.
No problem having a band at all - but fibbing about it (like any fib) is just not fair. Fern was ... and I say was .... a complete inspiration to me and I had nothing but admiration for her "hard work". To know that it has been a lie is so sad and I don't know why she just hasn't been up front about it in the past. Unfortunately she will be far more slated about the fib than the band ... naughty Fern!
Really disappointed in fern. i kept feeling that i was a failure as i couldnt lose the weight and fern was. thanks alot fern why not tell us the truth, i am gutted.
I think she's more than entitled to lie about how she lost weight. It's not really anyone's business- why should she have to disclose it to anyone? It's not like she's a role model for young, impressionable people. She probably wanted to promote a healthy lifestyle as she knew that's what she should have been doing, or done, years ago. Admiitting to having surgery like that is almost admitting to having no will power- hardly role model material, eh?
I'm not bothered about the fact that she had it done...but why couldn't she just admit it. I read lots of magazine intervews with her saying "i lost it through healthy eating and exersice" and i believed her. She is suppose to be a role model for "real" women and so i'm quite shocked at this revelation.
