Zac Efron is not headed to Broadway

Actor will not replace Daniel Radcliffe in Equus

Zac Efron says he would like to try something other than a musical next

Rest easy, Daniel Radcliffe. Zac Efron is not taking over the controversial starring role in the Broadway play Equus.

"No," said Efron, 20, debunking Internet reports claiming that he would be replacing Radcliffe. "I think it's a great role but I was not approached."

For the time being, the High School Musical star says he's sticking to films. But he is looking to branch out from musicals.

"I think it's important to always diversify, change it up and play different characters," he said Sunday at a press conference for High School Musical 3: Senior Year, "I think doing musicals all the time would get stale."

Still, there is one song-and-dance role that has Efron excited. He's ready to get Footloose, in the role made famous by Kevin Bacon.

"Footloose is heavily in development and we're hoping that perhaps next year it actually might be a reality," said HSM director Kenny Ortega, who will also be directing the remake of the '80s film. "Obviously I would love nothing more than to do another project with Zac. I'm hopeful."
