Joe McElderry beats Cheryl Baker to win Popstar To Operastar 2011

X Factor 2009 winner is voted No 1 all over again

Joe McElderry was mentored by Cheryl Cole on The X Factor

Joe McElderry triumphed on Popstar To Operastar last night.

The X Factor 2009 winner and former Bucks Fizz star Cheryl Baker fought it out as the two finalists together and Joe won the public vote.

He sang Nessun Dorma as his final number and showed just what an impressive vocal range he has.

'I always had my money on Joe,' said Cheryl, 57, gracious in defeat.

The cute Geordie, 20,was thrilled at his win after being dropped from Simon Cowell's record label earlier this year.

'Obviously it's disappointing, but I was only contracted for one album and we parted ways on a good note,' Joe told Now.

'I still think highly of Simon and I'm thankful for the opportunity he gave me.'
