Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery battle it out for first place

Country singer Scotty McCreery was announced as the winner of American Idol Season 10 last night.

The 17-year-old beat Lauren Alaina to the coveted record contract in a battle that saw 122m votes cast.

'I never in my wildest dreams...' said Scotty after host Ryan Seacrest named him the winner.

'I've got to thank the Lord first...he got me here.'

Scotty and Lauren, 16, formed the youngest duo ever to compete in an American Idol final, which also saw performances from Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Tony Bennett and Tom Jones.

Show judge Jennifer Lopez also took to the stage, dancing in a skimpy outfit while husband Marc Anthony sang.
