Matt Smith is the first Doctor Who ever to bag a nomination for a TV Bafta award.

The actor's up against Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch, Any Human Heart actor Jim Broadbent and Eric and Ernie's Daniel Rigby in the Leading Actor category.

Northampton boy Matt, 28, is the 11th incarnation of the Doctor and returned to our TV screens in a new series of the cult show on Saturday.

Other nominees for a TV Bafta include South Riding's Anna Maxwell Martin and This Is England '86 star Vicky McClure for Leading Actress. They'll be fighting it out with Natalie Press of Five Daughters and Accused's Juliet Stevenson.

Channel 4's teen comedy drama Misfits has landed the most nominations, with nods in the categories for Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Drama Series and New Media.

But popular entertainment show Strictly Come Dancing, which attracted audiences of up to 13m, failed to receive a nomination in the Entertainment Programme category.

The 2011 Philips British Academy Television Awards will be held on Sunday 22 May.
