American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez got emotional after the result

American Idol fans saw resident rocker Paul McDonald sent home from the talent show last night.

The 25-year-old was the first male contestant in the top 13 to be voted out by the public and his final performance of Rod Stewart classic Maggie May brought judge Jennifer Lopez, 41, close to tears and the crowd to their feet.

'Let's not be sad about this,' said Paul. 'It's been good fun, a good ride, it's been good times.'

Paul's elimination follows favourite Pia Toscano's shock eviction last week. 

Haley Reinhart and Stefano Langone were also in the bottom 3.

The results show also saw first American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson sing new track Don't You Want To Stay?

Rihanna later took to the stage with a toned-down performance of California King Bed in a nude gown.

'How good did @Rihanna look tonight??' Tweeted host Ryan Seacrest after the show.

The Barbadian pop star replied: '@RyanSeacrest: U were looking pretty filthy yourself!!!'
