American Idol viewers left stunned by result

Judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez were shocked by the American Idol result

American Idol fans were left reeling after the elimination of a show favourite last night.

Pia Toscano's stunning looks and flawless voice made her a front-runner from the start and judge Jennifer Lopez was furious when host Ryan Seacrest announced the 22-year-old was going home.

'I can't believe what just happened here,' said a tearful J-Lo, 41. 'I'm shocked and angry... I don't know what to say.' 

Pia was joined in the bottom 3 by Stefano Langone and Jacob Lusk.

But her version of Tina Turner's River Deep, Mountain High on Wednesday night received the fewest votes from viewers.

Despite the crowd booing the result, Pia remained dignified and performed her final number, I'll Stand By You, to a standing ovation before breaking down in tears.

'I'm truly going to miss my idol family!' she Tweeted today. 'Thank you @JLo Randy and Steven for believing in me. Love you and love my fans!'
