Colin Firth stars in The King's Speech

Colin Firth fought off hot competition from the likes of Jeff Bridges, Robert Duvall, Jesse Eisenberg, James Franco and Ryan Gosling to bag Best Actor at the Critics' Choice Awards on Friday and the Golden Globes last night.

The 50-year-old British actor, who stars as King George VI in The King's Speech, is now tipped to pick up an Oscar next month.

'I will be wearing this around my neck to give me magical powers as we all enter the fray again,' the actor said as he clutched his Critics' Choice trophy in LA.

Colin joined Best Actress winner Natalie Portman who received both Critics' Choice and Golden Globe honours for her performance as a tortured ballerina in the thriller Black Swan.

The 29-year-old showed off her
new baby bump at the Golden Globes on Sunday, wearing a dazzling Viktor & Rolf dress and red Swarovski
rose.

'Thank you to Benjamin for helping me to bring more creation into the world,' the actress told fiancé Benjamin Millepied, who she met on the set of the film.

Other winners at the weekend included Christian Bale and Melissa Leo who picked up Best Supporting Actor and Actress honours at both Hollywood ceremonies for their roles in The Fighter.

Movie winners included The Social Network for Best Picture and Toy Story 3 which bagged Best Animated film.
