Oprah Winfrey has denied persistent rumours that she is gay

Oprah Winfrey wept during an interview with American chat show host Barbara Walters tonight.

Asked about persistent rumours that she is in a lesbian relationship with best friend Gayle King and that her engagement to Stedman Graham - who she began dating in 1986 - is a sham, Oprah couldn't hold back the tears.

'She is the mother I never had, she is the sister everybody would want, she is the friend that everyone deserves,' Oprah told Barbara.

'I don't know a better person, I don't know a better person.'

After repeating this phrase emotionally, Oprah, 56, started to cry.

'Oh shoot,' she declared. 'I wasn't gonna cry here. Tissue please!'

Once she'd dried her face, Oprah continued with the interview.

'I have said we are not gay,' she insisted. 'I'm not lesbian. I'm not even a bit lesbian.'

Last year Oprah announced she was bringing her own much-loved chat show to an end after 25 years.

‘The last day will be September 9, 2011,' said her spokesperson.
