X Factor judge Cheryl Cole appeared to make hand gesture on Saturday's show

Cheryl Cole was snapped with this hand gesture on The X Factor

Cheryl Cole appeared to flick a V-sign on The X Factor on Saturday.

The Girls Aloud star directed the gesture at show creative director Brian Friedman after commentating about the routine he worked on with Diva Fever. 

But Cheryl's rep has played down the hand sign, saying it was part of a playful dance move she regularly does with the 33-year-old.  

'It was just a hip-hop gesture,' a source adds to the Daily Mirror. 

An X Factor spokesman refused to comment.
