Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox competed in final

Simon Cowell has quit as a judge on American Idol

Lee DeWyze has been crowned champion of American Idol 2010.

The 24-year-old beat Crystal Bowersox in the final, which aired in the States last night. 

'I have never been happier in my life,' said Lee.

His debut single will be U2's Beautiful Day.

The finale also marked Simon Cowell's last appearance as a judge.

The 50-year-old has quit to focus on launching the US version of The X Factor next year.

'Everybody asks who's going to replace me, who going to be the next judge,' Simon told the audience.

'The truth is, you guys are the judge of this show and you've done an incredible job over the years.'

The American Idol final will be shown in the UK on ITV2 tonight from 9pm.
