Simon Cowell announced the plan at the National Television Awards

Simon Cowell is organising a charity single in aid of victims of the Haiti earthquake.

The X Factor judge confirmed his plans at last night's National TV Awards.

'We had a request from the Prime Minister Gordon Brown and The Sun newspaper - would we put a record together?,' explains Simon, 50.

'We haven't got an awful lot of time, but we are going to do something and attempt to raise as much money as possible.

'I've got to try and get it all together in about 48 hours.'

Leona Lewis, 24, and Susan Boyle, 48, are expected to lend their voices to the cover.

Cheryl Cole, 26, supports the plan.

'I think it's a fantastic thing to do,' she tells the BBC. 'I'd love to be involved in it.'
