Coronation Street actress Maggie Jones has died aged 75.

The actress - who played soap favourite Blanche Hunt - passed away in hospital  this morning.

She had been recovering from an operation she had in October.

'Maggie had been making a slow recovery but her condition deteriorated early Wednesday morning and she passed away peacefully in her sleep,' an ITV spokeswoman said.

Fellow Corrie actor Ken Roache, who played her son-in-law Ken Barlow, paid homage to her by adding:

‘I don't think Maggie ever realised how much she was loved - not only by everyone on the show but by the millions of Blanche fans out there. She will be greatly missed."

Maggie first appeared in the soap as Blanche 35 years ago.
