Coronation Street star Maggie Jones is seriously ill in hospital.

The actress, 75, who plays Blanche Hunt in the ITV soap, had a major operation on Saturday.

No further details are being released about the procedure she had in Salford, Greater Manchester.

But a show spokeswoman has dismissed reports she ruptured her spleen in a fall.

Maggie has now been written out of Corrie for the foreseeable future.

‘We are all hoping and wishing the best for Maggie, who is much loved by everyone at Coronation Street,' says a spokeswoman.

Maggie
has played Deirdre's mum regularly since the late 1990s.

She was off work for several weeks last year with a knee and shoulder injury.
