Mel B's husband Stephen Belafonte was there to check there was no funny business going on, but why are Pete and his old flame suddenly the best of friends?

Pete, 36, was pictured enjoying a drink with 34-year-old Mel at the Pride Of Britain Awards last Monday and then he invited her to the ‘Fight Night' meal the evening after at the May Fair Hotel.

The exes didn't speak for years after their nine-month fling 13 years ago, until they reconciled on a trip to LA last year.

No one knows exactly what caused their change of heart and although at the time Pete made out that Jordan didn't feel threatened in any way by Mel, he knew that secretly his ex-wife was insanely jealous of their relationship.

‘He knows what buttons to press with Katie, but she's  just as bad - she had her ex Dane Bowers round her house only days after they split,' says our source.

‘The game playing never ends with those two. Mel and Pete get  on well, but it also suits them both for publicity. Mel was more than happy to be seen with him at the meal as he was being filmed for his reality show, so it's more PR for her.'
