MTV is making an American version of E4 teen drama Skins, renowned for its scenes of drug-taking and casual sex.

The new programme will follow a group of youths in Baltimore, Maryland.

It will be written by co-creator Bryan Elsley, who will also be executive producer.

Skins is one of those rare shows that cuts through to its core audience with unusually authentic stories,’ Liz Gateley, MTV's senior vice president of series development, tells the BBC.

‘We intend to preserve the authenticity of the British version and are excited to collaborate with the original team to develop stories that will speak to American youth.’

The UK edition, which will return for a fourth series next year, has already aired in the States on BBC America.
