David Beckham: We named Cruz after Tom Cruise

Footballer says actor was inspiration behind son’s name

Tom Cruise and David Beckham are best friends

David Beckham has revealed that he named 4-year-old son Cruz after Tom Cruise.

The footie hunk was introduced to the actor, 47, in 2003 and they became firm pals.

'I must admit, when we met Tom, I remember turning around to Victoria and saying, "Cruise is a great name, but we could spell it different",' David, 34, tells Grant Wahl in new book The Beckham Experiment.

'And also, living in Spain [at the time], Cruz is spelled the way it is in Spanish. So that's why we got it.'

But David insists he and wife Victoria, 35, do not follow Tom’s belief in Scientology.

'It's something I respect, because Tom's explained to me and Victoria what it's all about,' he adds.

'But he's never turned around and said, “That is what you should be doing,” because he would never do that. He and Katie Holmes have their beliefs...but me and Victoria have also got our own.'
