SPOILER ALERT Shock as American Idol reaches its final four

Favourite Adam Lambert placed in bottom two

Adam Lambert sang Feeling Good on last night's show

The contestants on American Idol have been reduced to a final four.

There was a shock in the elimination show – aired in America last night – when favourite Adam Lambert, 27, was placed in the bottom two after the audience vote.

During the show host Ryan Seacrest placed Allison Iraheta, 16, and Danny Gokey, 28, in one group and Matt Giraud, 23, and Kris Allen, 23, in another - then asked Adam to choose a group to join.

After choosing to stand with popular contestants Danny and Allison, Adam was told he was wrong and that he was in the bottom 3 with Kris and Matt.  

Adam has been a strong favourite in the show – with Simon Cowell even giving him a standing ovation for one of his performances.

Matt became the 9th conestant to be evicted.

American Idol is shown on ITV2 tonight at 8pm.
