Actor was worried how well he'd be received
Thursday, 5 February 2009
Matt Smith was initially reluctant to accept the part of Doctor Who.
The actor worried he couldn’t match the success of current Time Lord David Tennant, 37.
‘You have the debate in your head at some point, whether or not you should say yes,’ he explains.
‘It’s a big commitment, and there’s a huge fanbase, and all the responsibility that comes with it.
‘But I just so wanted to be the Doctor. I like the idea of a challenge.’
Matt, 26, admits he wasn't a huge fan of the show.
‘I can’t claim to have watched the show in its entirety or have been a follower as avidly as some people are,’ he tells Doctor Who Magazine.
‘But I’m going to make it my business to do so, and fall into it in as much depth as I possibly can.'
