Actor disappointed at signature shoe auction price
Saturday, 17 January 2009
David Tennant's trainers were sold off at a Children In Need charity auction and he fears their tatty state may have affected the bidding.
‘I was disappointed that they didn’t get that much. They were falling apart though,’ he admits.
When David first heard he'd got the leading role in Doctor Who in 2005, he 'laughed for a while and then said, "Can I have a long coat?"'
The 37-year-old decided to wear his own old Converses to play the Timelord because he wanted an individual look, partly inspired by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver's casual image.
'Tom Baker had a long scarf and Peter Davison wore a cricket jumper,' David tells the Telegraph magazine. 'I think if you're trying to be too self-consciously clever it trips up somehow.'
David's own twist was to go 'for something authoritative then messing it up so the (Doctor’s) suit was always wrinkled and too tight.’
Matt Smith will take over from David and become the 11th Doctor Who in 2010.
