Matt Smith will be the 11th actor to play Doctor Who.
The stage star, 26, is the youngest person to take on the role.
‘I’m flabbergasted. I haven’t slept, really. Doctor Who is an iconic part of our culture — and now I’m taking that on,’ he said after the appointment was revealed on special show Doctor Who Confidential: The Eleventh Doctor.
‘It’s nerve-wracking, exciting. It’s part of our culture — my granddad knows about it, my dad knows about it, it’s been going since 1963.
'It has the iconic status of Robin Hood or Sherlock Holmes.’
Matt’s biggest TV role to date was in BBC Two show Party Animals.
