Alan Carr won an award for Best Comedy Entertainment Personality on Saturday

Alan Carr has apologised for his comments dedicating his Best Comedy Entertainment Personality award to jailed Karen Matthews.

After accepting his gong at the British Comedy Awards, the comedian said he was obsessed with the evil mum who faked the kidnap of her daughter Shannon.

‘I think [Karen Matthews] is a gay icon. People like a bit of rough, don't they?,’ Alan said.

‘I must be obsessed with her actually if you look at my Google searches. So I should dedicate this award to her.’

Alan, 32, has now apologised for his comments.

‘I realise what I said about Karen was insensitive,’ he says. ‘I’m sorry for any offence this may have caused.

'Just to put the record straight I was being ironic, these aren't my real sentiments obviously.'
