Shamed comedian scoops Best Live Stand-Up and dedicates award to Jonathan Ross

Monday, 8 December 2008

Russell Brand was a winner at the British Comedy Awards last night.

Despite the controversy over and his and TV host Jonathan Ross's prank calls to Fawlty Towers star Andrew Sachs, he won the Best Live Stand-up award.

Russell, 33, accepted the award from Adam Sandler in a video link from LA and dedicated it to Jonathan.

'There are no comedy awards without Jonathan Ross, he is the king-maker,' he announced.

Russell resigned from his BBC2 radio show after the debacle and is now hoping to make it big in Hollywood.

Ricky Gervais won Best Television Comedy Actor for last year's Extras Christmas Special.

He also appeared by video link.

'I can't be bothered to be here, there in person,' Ricky quipped. 'This is beneath me to be honest: I've won real awards, Golden Globes and Emmys.'
