Comedian sparks mystery about injury

John Cleese performed a sketch with Fawlty Towers co-star Andrew Sachs

John Cleese has been photographed sporting a nasty shiner on his right eye.

The comedian was spotted with the bruise when he hosted a comedy gala for Prince Charles' 60th birthday at the New Wimbledon Theatre on Wednesday.

Throughout the night John – using cosmetics and props - picked up a series of on-stage ‘injuries’.

Although he later removed the make-up he used during the act, the black eye remained.

John, 69, is alleged to have arrived with the bruise and disguised it with concealer at the start of the show.

And later he baffled staff at the hotel he was staying at with the shiner.

'He came into the bar for a drink and a bite to eat,’ a source tells the Daily Mail. ‘He pointed at his eye and said: "Hey, check out my eye."

'Everyone was looking at it, trying to work out if it was real. We asked him but he just laughed and winked.'
