Wayne Rooney was cautioned yesterday for allegedly spitting at a photographer.

The footballer arrived at London’s Holborn police station with his lawyers, where he is said to have handed in a letter of apology.

Wayne, 22, was accused of spitting on Lee Simmons, 21, in the summer as he left a restaurant with wife Coleen, 22.

He was quizzed about the incident on 29 July but was not arrested.

Although Wayne had initially told officers he spat on the ground, saliva on Lee's clothes are reported to have matched his DNA.

‘A 22-year-old man attended a central London police station by prior arrangement,’ Scotland Yard confirmed to The Sun. ‘He received a caution for common assault.’
