Suzanne Shaw: I was too poor to eat

Dancing On Ice winner was £200,000 in debt

Suzanne Shaw has admitted that she was £200,000 in debt following her split with Darren Day.

The Dancing On Ice winner says she spent two years struggling to make ends meet, often going without food so her son Corey, 3, could eat.

‘I literally crawled on my hands and knees on the floor, hiding, when the bailiffs came knocking on my door,’ she says.

‘At one point my mum Janet, who was living in New Zealand, had to order food parcels – including milk for Corey – from a supermarket website and have them delivered to me because I didn’t have a dime to spare.'

But the Dancing On Ice star says she was determined to pay off all her debts, despite being advised to declare bankruptcy.

'I kept a penny jar, where I would save enough to make sure I could buy bread and milk when I ran out of food,' she says.

‘I've never discussed it before. I was too embarrassed and proud. It was bad enough always being described as the woman dumped by Darren Day and left holding the baby, never mind the desperate straights I was in.’

Suzanne, 26, has since paid off everything she owed and says that job prospects are now flooding in.

‘I’ve never been a victim or a quitter and was determined to hold myself together for the sake of my son,’ she tells Hello! magazine.
