Ben Fogle has been taken ill after being bitten by a flesh-eating bug.

The TV presenter was shooting a new series of BBC2 documentary Extreme Dreams in the jungles of Peru when he contracted the potentially fatal parasite that is transmitted by a species of sand fly.

Ben, 34, who has been left with has an inch-wide hole in his forearm, has undergone a series of test at the Hospital For Tropical Diseases in London.

'Ben is being treated for this condition but he is very fit and he has great confidence in the specialists who are treating him,’ his spokesperson tells the Daily Mail.

Ben rose to fame in the original series of Castaway in 2000, where 36 people spent a year living on a remote Scottish island. 

Extreme Dreams airs on BBC2 next year.
