The Britain's Got Talent winner George Sampson confides that he wants to date someone who shares his passion
Thursday, 12 June 2008
George Sampson scooped £100,000 on Britain’s Got Talent and the talented teenage breakdancer has a huge female following. He’s 30 minutes late for his chat with Now because he’s been mobbed by screaming girls! Luckily, the cheeky schoolboy from Warrington’s keeping calm and taking it all in his stride…
Congratulations! How’s your life changed since winning?
It’s just unbelievable. On Monday I had a GCSE exam and assembly afterwards. Then me and my dance team went to the Trafford Centre in Manchester where I used to dance and we had a good shopping spree, although I didn’t spend my winnings because I haven’t seen them yet. I’ve been so busy with interviews and rehearsals, it’s all been a bit of a blur since I won, to be honest.
How did your exam go?
Really well. It was for music and I think I did OK. I’ve got a personal tutor for three hours a day now while I’m on the Britain’s Got Talent tour, but my school’s sending me loads of work to do.
We hear you were attacked by hordes of screaming girls on the way to this interview.
Yeah, it was great! A bit mad, but brilliant.
Do you have a girlfriend?
Nope.
What sort of girls do you go for?
Dancers because they share my passion.
Have you spoken to Simon Cowell since the final?
Yeah, I spoke to him about having a meeting this week and we’re going to talk about what’s happening next, so that’s great. He’s behind me all the way.
Have you had many exciting work offers yet?
Yeah, loads. I’ve been offered sponsorships and stadium gigs, but I’m not doing anything until the tour’s over on 22 June and my mind’s settled.
What’s your dream job?
I’d really love to do a music video with Justin Timberlake. I just think that would be so cool. I’m sure I could teach him a few moves.
Is it true that doctors warned you to stop breakdancing?
I have Scheuermann’s disease, which is curvature of the spine – I went blind in one eye for two months because of the disease. It’s not something that stops me dancing, but when it hurts I have to take a break. If the condition gets worse I’ll have to wear a back brace and I won’t physically be able to dance, but it’s not going to stop me.
What are you going to spend your £100,000 prize on?
I’m definitely going to pay off my mum’s mortgage, even though she’s really independent and keeps telling me no. Then I’m going to go to LA for a break, which I’m really looking forward to. I can’t wait. After that, I have to practise for the Royal Variety Performance on 11 December. I’m very nervous. I don’t know what I’ll say to Prince Charles yet.
Which of the contestants do you most get on with?
Everyone’s great, but Andrew [Johnston] is my best friend. We’re almost the same age and we can talk about anything. We’ve both been bullied because of what we do and we’ve both been through the same thing with the competition. We had a sleepover in my hotel room the other night, but the Cheeky Monkeys ruined the party by nicking all the sweets and using my computer!
