Peter Kay is on course to top the charts this Sunday ahead of last year's X Factor winner Leon Jackson.
The comedian, 35, is currently at No 4 with his spoof single The Winner’s Song, which he performs as transsexual character Geraldine McQueen.
But the track, co-written with Gary Barlow, is flying off the shelves and looks likely to overtake Leon’s Don’t Call This Love, which has the No 2 slot.
Pink, 29, currently remains at No 1 in the midweek chart with her tune So What.
‘Peter’s song is picking up serious momentum,’ a source tells The Sun. ‘It is selling faster than any of its rivals. If it continues like this for the rest of the week it will be No 1.
‘People have been clamouring to buy the DVD single too.'
Peter debuted his single on spoof reality show Britain’s Got The Pop Factor…And Possibly A New Celebrity Jesus Christ Soapstar Superstar Strictly On Ice, which was watched by 5.5million people on Sunday.
But Leon, 19, isn’t prepared to go down without a fight.
‘I'm a fan of Peter Kay, I think he's a great comedian,’ he tells the Daily Record. ‘I'm so happy to get my music out there this week. The response from everyone has been simply amazing. Thanks to everyone that has bought the single so far.’
