Angelina Jolie has given birth to twins with Brad Pitt at her side at the Fondation Lenval hospital in Nice, France.
‘The babies are doing well. The operation went just perfectly,’ Dr. Michel Sussmann told PEOPLE Sunday. ‘Angelina is in very good spirits. Brad Pitt was at her side. He was there and all was well.’
It has been confirmed that Angelina gave birth by Cesarean to a boy, named Knox Leon, and a girl, Vivienne Marcheline, on Saturday night. Both babies are healthy with Knox weighing in at 5.03 lbs, and Vivienne 5 lbs.
Angelina, 33, and partner Brad Pitt, 44, now have six children, as the twins join Maddox, 6, Pax, 4, Zahara, 3, and Shiloh, 2.
‘The mother and father are very, very happy,’ Sussmann told PEOPLE.
According to Angelina's doctor the Cesarean took place ealier than planned ‘for medical reasons’ to ensure the babies were born ‘in the best conditions.’ Jolie is expected to stay in French hospital for a few days.
The family has been living in the south of France since spring, and Angelina checked into the Fondation Lenval hospital on 1 July in preparation for the births.
Angelina revealed that she was shocked to be expecting twins, but not apprehensive. ‘It did shock us, and we jumped to six [children] quickly,’ she tells Entertainment Weekly. ‘But we like a challenge.’
