He's in good spirits and still hopes to perform this weekend, his rep says

Singer Bobby Brown was hospitalized with a mild heart attack but is in "great spirits" and hopes to perform this weekend, his rep said Wednesday.

"He's recovering nicely," rep Phaedra Parks tells PEOPLE. "We thank everybody for their thoughts and prayers. We really appreciate the outpouring of support."

Brown, 40, felt chest pains Tuesday afternoon and "was rushed to the hospital," Parks says. By Wednesday morning, he was in "great spirits and has a great prognosis from his doctors." He was expected to be released later in the day.

Brown, who had not experienced heart problems before, is scheduled to perform at the V100 Taste of Soul concert and festival in Los Angeles on Oct. 13 and still planned to take the stage.

"He's a performer," says Parks. "It's what he does best."

In addition to his new medical problem, Brown is in the midst of an ongoing divorce and custody proceeding with Whitney Houston, 44. The two are expected in an Orange County, Calif., court on Oct. 22.

Brown's heart attack was first reported by TMZ.com.
