Hit show accused of discrimination

Desperate Housewives has been hit by allegations of racism after the first episode of the series aired on ABC in America.

In a scene where Susan, played by Terri Hatcher, visits the gynaecologist she questions the doctor's credibility by asking: 'Can I check those diplomas because I want to make sure they're not from some med school in the Philippines.'

Almost immediately the station was flooded with complaints and Filipinos started a online petition against the show. Even politicians have waded in on the debate.

Senator Ramon Revilla said: 'The makers of Desperate Housewives should formally and publicly express their apology in the very next episode.'

ABC has issued an apology, saying: '[The studio] offers its sincere apologies for any offence caused by the brief reference in the season premiere.

'There was no intent to disparage the integrity of any aspect of the medical community in the Philippines.'
