Cate Blanchett: Marriage is insanity

Star doesn't believe in soul mates

Though Cate Blanchett makes her living acting in fictional stories, she says her personal life all about reality.

The star – who is happily married – tells Marie Claire in its February issue that she doesn't buy into romantic notions such as "soul mates."

"I think marriage is all about timing," says the actress, who met her husband, Australian playwright Andrew Upton, on the set of a TV show in 1996. "Getting married is insanity; I mean, it's a risk – who knows if you're going to be together forever? But you both say, 'We're going to take this chance, in the same spirit."

As for her life as a celebrity, Blanchett tells the magazine that her career seemed to happen naturally. "I just don't see myself as a heroine in my own narrative," she says. "It was all kind of business as usual for me. One moment led to the next."

Still, she is one of Hollywood's most in-demand leading ladies. At the moment, three of her movies are in theaters – Babel, The Good German and Notes on a Scandal, for which she's nominated for a Golden Globe.

She's also currently shooting The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,with Brad Pitt.

Blanchett says fitting family life into her demanding schedule – she and Upton have two sons, Dashiell, 5, and Roman, 2 – ultimately requires sacrifices, like, say, getting rest.

"It just means getting two hours of sleep less."
