50 Cent ticketed in New York City

After driving in an 'unsafe way', rapper is taken to police station

50 Cent

50 Cent was pulled over by police Friday afternoon in New York City, PEOPLE has confirmed.

NYPD spokesperson Det. Madelyne Galindo tells PEOPLE the rapper (real name: Curtis Jackson) was handcuffed, escorted to a Manhattan police precinct and issued four tickets, for making an unsafe lane change, driving with an expired license, driving an unregistered vehicle and driving an uninsured vehicle.

Galindo tells PEOPLE police observed him making an unsafe lane change – he didn't signal – in his Lamborghini at 8th Ave. and 34th St.

The officers pulled him over one block north at 35th St. and discovered that he did not have his license on him, nor did he have the registration or insurance information for the car.

He was escorted to a nearby police station to escape the crowd of onlookers that had gathered. "He was taken to the station only for safety reasons because a crowd gathered because of who he is," Galindo tells PEOPLE.

Galindo says 50 Cent was not fingerprinted or photographed, and said, "When we issue a summons it is in lieu of an arrest."

Galindo says she believes an officer drove the Lamborghini to the station. It was then relinquished to one of 50 Cent's friends, who had promptly arrived with the car's license and registration and a valid driver's license. Galindo says the entire ordeal was over before 3 p.m.

A rep for the rapper had no comment.
