David Beckham was recently spotted at the Olympics with his sons

Olympic gold medal winner Katherine Grainger has revealed that Sir Steve Redgrave arranged for David Beckham to call her as a reward for her success - but that she didn't take the call.

The rowing star, who won the women's double sculls event with Anna Watkins last week, is a big Becks fan and was promised a meeting with him by Olympic legend Steve.

Yet the blonde, whose mum also loves the footballer, didn't realise that it was her idol calling when a mystery number appeared on her phone.

‘It was an unknown number and I was at a hockey match, sitting in front of a four-piece band,' says Katherine, 36.

‘So I couldn't have spoken anyway. If I had answered it, that would have been the end of it in any case.

‘But it ended up even better that I got it on voicemail because I let my mum hear it. At the end he gave his love to my family.

‘So spread the word, my family are friends with David Beckham.'

Katherine has met several celebrities since her victory, including Prince Harry, yet she still hopes for another chance to speak to 37-year-old David.

‘He could not have been nicer,' she tells the Daily Record.

‘He said that it was well deserved and it would be an honour to meet me. I didn't get a number, so now I guess I'll wait for the elusive phone call to come through from a mystery number.'
