Comedian Russell Brand says his marriage to singer Katy Perry failed because of 'practical reasons'

Russell Brand has revealed that he was keen to start a family with his ex-wife Katy Perry.

The comic discussed having a baby with the singer, 27, before they split in December 2011, but he hints that it wasn't the right time for both of them.

'She's young, successful and dedicated,' says Russell, 37.

'[The reality is] you can't fully understand it until you do it. I was really into the idea of marriage and having children.'

Russell says his 14-month marriage to Katy - which was officially dissolved earlier this week - was 'lovely' and that it mainly didn't work out for 'practical reasons'.

He confirms that he's been dating former talent agent Isabella Brewster but he isn't ready to settle down again just yet.

Russell tells US radio host Howard Stern: 'If you've been on a diet of rice for a while and suddenly Willy Wonka asked you to take over the factory, you'd be kicking over barrels of candy and swimming in a chocolate river.'
