Played at thousands of weddings, Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You is the best-selling single by a female artist of all time

Whitney Houston has died at the age of 48, her publicist has confirmed.

Emergency services were called to the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel in LA on Saturday afternoon, but life-saving attempts were unsuccessful and the award-winning singer was pronounced dead at 3.55pm.

Whitney had been partying 'heavily' with friends on Thursday and Friday, TMZ.com reports, but cause of death is not yet known.

Ex-husband Bobby Brown, 43, called out 'I love you, Whitney!' in the middle of his concert on Saturday and a string of celebrities have paid tribute to The Bodyguard star.

'No words! Just tears #DearWhitney,' Tweets Rihanna, 23.

Simon Cowell, 52, writes: 'I am so sad to hear about Whitney. We have lost one of the greatest singers of all time.'

Whitney Houston was one of the most popular female singers through the 80s and 90s, but her career was later overshadowed by reports of drug use, which she
admitted became 'heavy' after she starred in 1992 movie The Bodyguard.
