Prince Harry awarded top co-pilot gunner on Apache helicopter course

Prince Charles is full of pride for talented son Prince Harry

Prince Harry has finally qualified as an Apache helicopter pilot after a tough 18-month training course - and he passed with ease.

The 27-year-old, who could be sent to the front line in Afghanistan as early as autumn, yesterday picked up the prize of top co-pilot gunner on the course at a dinner at Wattisham Air Station, near Ipswich.

The co-pilot gunner is one of 2 crew in an Apache and takes charge of the mission, fires weapons, navigates and occasionally takes over controls. 

'The course is extremely challenging, teaching and testing students in their flying skills, decision-making and mental agility,' Colonel Neale Moss, the Apache Force Commander, tells the Daily Mail.

Harry now has 'Limited Combat Ready' status and has been assigned to 662 Squadron, 3 Regiment Army Air Corps.
