Katy Perry: My car was repossessed twice but I made it in the end

Katy Perry feared her career would never take off

She's the girl who tried to tame Russell Brand. But friends know that after their split, Katy Perry won't be licking her wounds for too long. She knows how to pick herself up and start again.

Back in 2006 it looked like Katy's dream of being a star was all over - she'd just been dropped from her third record label.

‘I recall her sitting on my floor crying,' says songwriter Bonnie McKee. ‘There was a moment when I thought: "She isn't going to make it."'

Instead of admitting defeat, Katy, 27, bounced back. Just two years later, she topped the charts with I Kissed A Girl.

Katy first signed as a young teen with Christian label Red Hill Records and released a gospel-rock album, but it ‘reached maybe 100 people' before the label went bankrupt.

‘I was shipwrecked,' she admits. Still desperate for success, Katy moved to LA when she was 17 to work with producer Glen Ballard.

But while working on her debut pop album One Of The Boys, Katy was signed and dropped by two major labels.

‘I had the rug pulled out from me so many times,' she says.

During this time, Katy lived on baked potatoes and cheese slices.

‘I was so broke I used to borrow outfits, get make-up done at counters and sneak into events. My car was repossessed twice,' she explains. ‘I was praying my cheques wouldn't bounce.'

Loved ones urged Katy to give up her dream, but she never wavered. ‘I knew I'd get the opportunity to step up one day,' she says.

‘My motto was to live life to the fullest - because at the end of it, you're dead.'

Then, in 2007, her luck changed when she was signed by Capitol Records. In the summer of 2008 she scored an instant smash with I Kissed A Girl.
