SHOCK! Gerard Butler 'cheats death' in terrifying surfing accident

The Hollywood star runs into trouble at Mavericks

Gerard Butler was admitted to hospital at the weekend after a terrifying ordeal during a surf stunt.

The 42-year-old was filming for new movie Of Men And Mavericks - based on the life of late surfer Jay Moriarty - when he was forced underwater by massive waves at Mavericks on the San Francisco coast.

'Butler was held down for a solid two-waves and took 4 or 5 more waves on the head,' says pro Frank Quirarte.

'He was then washed through the rocks before he was finally plucked out.'

Gerard was kept overnight at the Stanford Medical Center but his exact condition isn't known.

'He had that 100-yard stare that surfers get after a near death experience,' Frank tells the Daily Mirror.

'Waves were running at 12ft, but some large ones had got through.'
